How to be original in a copy + paste aesthetic world

Hello, Gorgeous!

The things that made me weird as a child are the things that make me formidable as an adult.

What makes you stand out from the rest as a young person are instances of harassment according to the group.

I was lame for not wearing the latest Nike trainers only to later be pulled aside saying how girls thought I was lucky for wearing designer jackets. (Thanks, Mum. I had no clue.)

Growing up, I cried in my room that I was not allowed to play video games as the other kids did, because I had piano lessons and household responsibilities.

Now as a functioning adult, I adult harder than those older than me.

I had discipline from a young age since my parents valued treating me like a grown up with self respect. It is natural for me to be prepared and show up on time whilst I watch 30 somethings flounder with basic principles.

Instead of watching TV, those piano lessons propelled me into learning 6 languages. A majority of them by choice.

Private language tutors were impressed and asked if I was classically trained in music, because I could immediately hear inflections from their accent and imitate the sounds.

I knew how to do my taxes from a young age and studied the Classics (of literature) in various editions from our family library. My social skills never faltered, because my parents were the utmost gracious hosts.

Christians pull me aside to teach about scriptures and I recite the New Testament with each King’s version in multiple tongues as a Jew.

Strangers are surprised at my references to geography and wars from their foreign nations as we have a three hour conversation in their native speech on why their empire collapsed.

I am not special.

I am the dumb-dumb underachiever in my family who chose not to stop learning. My degree was never finished because I dropped out of university. That did not stop me.

When everyone took a rest with their natural intelligence, I tried three times harder to never let education conclude.

Nothing ever feels complete, because the world is full of information. So I hold this knowledge loosely as paradigms shift with the Earth around the Sun.

Here is how to be original in a copy+paste aesthetic world.

Points of persistent conversation are social media globalising common threads of thought and observation.

This applies to matters of

  • Taste
  • Beauty
  • Internet slang
  • All forms of self-expression

Everyone thinks they are original, when the new generation is simply doing what has been done before, bringing it to a new light on their preferred platform.

Get off social media.

If you address the measure too extreme, simply unfollow those who do not inspire you.

If they do inspire you, ask why. When the reason does not make you feel good, it will be easier to unsubscribe.

When the time is right, you will come back to them once their rebrand speaks to you and you align again. That does not always occur, so you need to make alterations consistent with you.

Declutter devices.

To have a fresh state of mind, you need to rejuvenate your thinking with a blank page.

One of the many moments individuals have an identity crisis is when they are faced with starting new.

You might miss old parts of you, so keep them. But be certain you are keeping the facets that face your improved future.

This can look like

  • removing old files, apps, photos, or screenshots that do not call to you anymore
  • deleting contacts you do not plan on speaking to again
  • cancelling plans on your calendar that do not serve you or your loved ones

When you clear your devices, they are visuals of your mind. They were past thoughts you had reflecting on your recent state of being.

To have a clear mind and good judgement, you need to let go of things that no longer serve you.

Meet people in real life you care about.

You are more than welcome to make new introductions, but it will be easy to see right away who is all about the latest trends or clout (I hate that word!🤮).

It also makes it easy to get to know new people when you are introduced by loved ones and friends you think of highly. They will always have decent recommendations on healthy media to consume, fabulous things to try, and of course, people.

The day you curate your devices is the day you realise who your true friends are. Pay attention to them, because they have been around this long for a reason.

The cycle of having exceptional people around makes you better, but you have to be an exceptional person to begin with.

When you are exceptional in one area, those who are exceptional in another recognise this. Discipline and consistent work towards something attracts similar-minded individuals.

Start wearing a timepiece.

In a past post, I mentioned how offline is the new luxury. It is not only about smelling the flowers and feeling the sun, but being mindful of how you spend your time. This will tell you who you are.

Sometimes I look at my phone to check the time even though I am on my computer. This makes absolutely no sense.

Regarding what is directly in front of us will save phone battery along with relying on our phone for everything.

I spread out my life across the real world with genuine socialising, wearing a watch, and people-watching versus looking at my phone just because.

Recently, I was gifted a couple watches and it made all the difference in how I view my new phone [and life] with peace. Not only does it wear as stunning jewellery, but it gives me a sense of pride in my real life.

Focus on what is in front of you by marking the digital world solely as what it is–noise. Technically, it does not even exist. We make it exist.

Remember your heritage.

A lot of the impressions we have of the world are the ideas we grew up with. Whether it be food we appreciate, songs that get stuck in our heads, or the way we treat others.

Highlight all the things you adore about what your ancestors gave you, what you admire in them, and model them as your modern day influences.

The immediate people around you might not be interested in the ethnic dishes your mum made or traditional movies you quote. Lean into what your DNA blessed you with and follow your heart when it comes to taste.

These are your natural sensibilities and should never be taken for granted.

I used to be embarrassed about my lunches around other kids. Now, I am seeking these recipes and drooling with my friends who have the same culture about these foods. My body is healthier, because of it and I smile when I smell it.

Always remember where you came from and be proud because your heritage cultivated a lot of your existing strength.

Dive deep into your language.

People online might see you as the girl who rarely posts, but you are the woman with the most beautiful handwritten script.

A person who only watches action movies will never be able to talk to you about the second movement of the last Bruckner symphony you attended.

Someone who is afraid of heights will never know how deeply you love the hum of the Austro Engine AE 300.

Become obsessed with the depths of your knowledge and exercise it regularly with constant breathing practice.

This does not mean only to read about the remains of a fallen kingdom but travel and see them in person.

Clients at work talk of sports mentioning the ones they watch. When they ask me about the sports I prefer, I address the ones I do myself. They make a face of disapproval, so I ask if they do the sports and respond with slump with disappointment in themselves.

You can watch sports, but play some as well. If you are not able–that is perfectly fine. But on average, people choose not to with excuses.

Find 1,001 reasons to be proud of each activity you take the time to learn. Others might not understand, but they don’t have to. Usually they will be impressed because they did not even try.

Stick to your own goals. Not other people’s.

I know someone who loves pilates because all the paid influencers on social media do it.

It does not benefit her body in the way she wants. I could easily diagnose what to do as a person who works out daily but don’t dare, because it will fall on deaf ears. (Also, unsolicited advice sits poorly.) I know my audience.

The unpopular route is not for everyone, because people want to be on a social hierarchy that makes them feel attractive.

For example, a supermodel with an ill-fitting outfit is going to look amazing no matter what. Those who do not have a similar body type will not. But they feel attractive, because the outfit is in association with someone who gets paid to remain attractive.

People have no business wearing ill-fitting clothes. People have no business looking inside Kris Jenner’s jet. Focus on yourself in a world of social media highlights.

If you feel ordinary, the most ordinary thing to do is what everyone else is doing. So why bother?

My goal is to reach 6 miles on a regular day on the treadmill when my friends who inspire me do an average of 12 miles. My average is 4 miles. I run 6 miles on outstanding days in the same time as 4 miles. That version of me is my own inspiration.

Your goal might not look like breathing like a whale in running shorts, but it can be wherever you want to start. I want to start reading print books again and it is D I F F I C U L T. To do this, I sit down and read pages aloud enunciating each word well with intention.

Do what you want and/or have to do at your pace–not what the world tells you to.

Stop looking sideways and set your gaze forward. Excelsior.
