How to rest and self care like an It Girl

My entire body hurts.

From workouts. Work. House work. Unpaid work. Staring at screens. Driving. Emotional and social energy. Living and breathing. 

My face and ear literally hurts from sleeping so hard and long on my belly. 

I am covered in bruises from bumping tables and – mostly bumping tables, because all the tables are full of people and I have to walk around them.

This is a good problem. Life is great! 

But I’m physically tired. 

My brain still works fabulously, so I keep working as I lie down. 

Thoughts actually go 100 miles per hour the moment I sit down. 

A bit ago, I made a YouTube post on how I sometimes come home and immediately want to fall on the floor from a long day of work. Or sometimes simply being out.

Here are ways I find rest as someone who wants to do it all.

This is the formula I stick to: 

  1. Turn off my brain while my body is active.
  2. Turn off my body while my brain is active.

Turn off your body while your brain is active.

When my body is resting, I am at my computer writing away, learning a new skill, or mastering ones I want to grow. 

Other times it is lying in bed with my Kindle. 

Soft multitasking is key. 

Rest and work like this do not seem like a big deal to you unless you are plotting world domination.

Eye gel patches with a morning coffee while learning about index funds help me start my morning slowly yet with a steady buildup of inspiration for the day.

Same how you would do a hair mask whilst shaving and scrubbing in the shower.

Earphones have become my friend when my sweetheart is asleep. This will change once we move and have more space. 

I love listening to audiobooks and podcasts when the night is quiet. I get a lot more done rising earlier or sleeping later depending on my schedule.

Turn off your brain while your body is active.

I still watch mindless YouTube videos of social commentary and true crime. 

I still listen to new albums. 

I still watch hilarious action films. 

Nothing has changed. 

But I do it on the treadmill. Or listen whilst driving. Or cooking. 

Thanks, Siri! Sometimes. 

God knows you are not always accurate. But that’s a beneficial feature of Apple’s security.

This formula has helped me stay consistent with always being productive (rest is productive). It has been my default for more than 5 years without realising.

For the ultimate rest – do this 2 day cleanse. 

I have one day where I am at home softly productive with the method mentioned above.

Then another day to do nothing. 

It could be becoming a vegetable 100%, but I like to think of grunt tasks as also ‘doing nothing’.

That extra day is perfect for 

  • An extra long, steady, slow workout you’ve been wanting to do 
  • An everything shower
  • Deep cleaning the parts you missed of your home throughout the week
  • Doing or touching up your nails
  • Multiple loads of laundry 
  • Organising your week cleaning emails, catching up with friends, and planner admin
  • Assembling outfits & clothing care
  • A spa day at home

Then watching a movie with a loved one. 

My sweetheart and I like to make a huge dinner and eat it together. Or order Postmates and eat sweets while playing with each other’s hair.
