Summer Through Winter Hobbies: Sports I am mastering this year

Hello, Gorgeous!

I absolutely love building skills and finding new hobbies to conquer.

It recently dawned on me that there are certain pastimes I appreciate throughout various seasons that differ because of the climate and accessibility.

Every year, I have a bucket list of goals I want to achieve along with skills I would like to master.

Here are the hobbies I am fully diving into this year.

Horse jumping

Technically speaking, I can do this all year round in Los Angeles because we are blessed with agreeable weather (for the  most part) throughout the year.

There are a few schools in my area–near and far as well–becuase there is plenty of land in California. The only issue I had was deciding on which one is best for me along with attending shows that are a few hours away.

I chose horse jumping because I love a bit of action and adrenaline. Not to mention becoming friends with a new animal I can care for.

Ice Skating

This is a great transitional activity for me because when it is too hot, I can go to the rink and feel like a new person. Even though it seems romantic in Winter, it actually makes me go insane feeling cold indoors and outside.

As said in the Nordics,

Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær!

aka

There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing.

Skiing

Skiing is something you really have to prepare for quite a bit. You need a lot of gear and planning to go to the mountains on a trip unless there is one available immediately near you.

I have been avoiding skiing for quite some time now, because of this. The expense to stay somewhere else and then go back to normal life does not make sense no matter how often people say, ‘Mountains are only 1-2 hours away from Los Angeles.’

Yes, but a 4 hour drive is not on my agenda all the time. One has to be strategic about setting aside time for this and making a purposeful excursion count. This is the year I engage.

Ice climbing

Something I am keeping in mind for future is ice climbing. This will always be in the back of my mind as I read a few books and work by Sir Ranulph Fiennes and personally know a few true blue climbers.

They are all from the Nordics and live in this mounting world, but I am not ready to dip my toes in just yet. Also, I started enjoying getting my nails done.

Music

Music is beautiful for Winter spirit and I was raised classically trained in a few instruments along with autodidact ones. My step by step process is hindered by the fact that I have not sorted out my cloffice yet. Nor my apartment as a whole, but this is on the radar this year.

People are always surprised to find out I am very much into every genre under the sun. Including obscure traditional folk music from different parts of the world.

I love everything about music but try not to share it, because I do not want to attract music industry people into my life again. Oh dear. That is a different beast.

Fencing

My first love. She will always be in my heart and I am looking forward to excelling in foil. The only thing is I remember how sweltering it was to put on gear that stuck to my body in the Summer.

I found a few new places near and far from me that have open-fence so I can practise bouting with strangers. It is one of the biggest challenges to face a new opponent in combat but I am excited to become a better competitor.

Little Skills that are more affordable with less gear

Freestyle football

I love watching polafreestyle dance with her football and be creative. She inspires me to have fun and play football on my own by testing out what I can do.

My father was always playing hacky sack at home as another form of this with his friends. You can get a football on Amazon for $10 and play away in your living room for hours.

Nickelboards

Growing up, I loved skateboarding. Instead of going out to a skate park in the hot sun, I like to practise at home with a little board closer to my size that makes much less noise.

The bigger 59mm wheels can also light up and are more forgiving to the ground versus slamming a piece of wood around that can chip.

These are only my passions.

When people ask me what type of sports I am interested in, their face scrunches with confusion because they have zero fascination with what I am talking about. It opens their minds up a bit more or they write me off entirely.

It does not bother me, because when you ask others what sports they appreciate, they mention mostly what they watch. I prefer to do something rather than sit around watching someone else do it.

Find your challenge.

These are simply my interests. Taking on new objectives that are simply for you and no one else make you formidable in one area that nobody can take away from you.

Staying active in these territories will take you years to master but when you see your gear around the house, it says a bit about who you are and reminds you to take it up again.

Practising at home is my favourite because I can do stupid tricks and try new techniques.

The hobbies you choose to master are not just seasonal escapes, but the quiet architecture of who you are becoming.
