He drove an hour at 10pm to save me when I was locked out

Hello, Gorgeous!

You know those truly selfless moments when someone shows up for you with nothing to gain?

No money. No sex. No clout. Truly selfless spending his own money, time, and energy to make sure you have what you need to feel safe. I was unintentionally forced to surrender to this feeling by my own hand.

This is the story of the night I accidentally locked myself out of my apartment—and the man who cared enough to come save me.

It was 9pm when I was about to set off to see my girls.

Having switched bags, I set my keys on the entryway console to be certain to grab on the way out. Instinctively thinking my essentials were already in my evening tote, I locked the bottom door as I always do and reached up to lock the deadbolt.

Recounting my last intention, I did not panic.

Selfies I took whilst locked outside

I contacted a few people in my life who could potentially help.

Alerting my boyfriend first, I wanted him to know in case something happened as he had my location.

Then there was the locksmith whose number I lost after purchasing a new phone. After that was a very handy individual who would flirt and his immediate response was exactly that along with the fact that he was two hours away for work.

Updating my boyfriend, he immediately laughed at the replies and came up with potential solutions.

I used my $5,000 bag’s designer keychain but it did not work.

At that moment, he looked up on the internet how to break into my place over the phone.

I tried what I could including using my Dior Lady bag keychain to pry my apartment open. Nope. At least I have a romantic story to tell why it is now scratched.

The problem was I had my nails done. I could have done what Giuseppe suggested with short nails but did not have the strength nor the ingenuity without damaging the property. And putting my neighbours in danger from someone trying to break in in future.

He offered to drive an hour to break into my apartment for me.

This being the initial remedy and followed with a short list of other possibilities. He dropped what he was doing and I waited an hour in my stilettos standing outside like a lost cat. (In the process, I also made contact with a cute stray cat.) I stopped contacting others, because I knew he was on his way.

Feeling terrible for being a burden on him, he repeatedly expressed he was happy to help.

He lives an hour away and had to wake up really early for his new job in the morning.

There was no way I could stay with him overnight, because of several serious factors that could affect both of our careers and routines in general. It simply did not make sense for either of us to stay at each other’s for the night.

Not being able to sit in my car to wait, I stood in my Louboutins in my gated community and was worried my neighbours would wonder why I am standing outside dressed in girls night out attire. It absolutely shatters me to be a nuisance to others, especially when it is negative.

Recently, he lost his own keys and knew the feeling.

With a diagnosed case of ADHD, my sweetheart is normally a pretty prepared man. He is his version of high energy yet calm when dealing with an overwhelming pace of events.

A week ago, he lost his own keys only to find them in his dishwasher days later. Frustrated at himself, he instantly forgave me because he knew it was a pure accident considering how organised I typically am. This truly never happens. I felt so ashamed to bother him with this.

To placate his own qualms, he got his hands on a Tile to be able to track his keys and wallet to prevent future incidents.

He laughed it off, showed up at impeccable speed, and parked in a red zone for me.

Giuseppe coming to my rescue

All to save my irresponsible arse.

Without hesitation, he hit the ground running to get to work. Almost forgetting to greet me because he was on a mission, he kissed me on the way in to say hello with his Rottweiler puppy on his lead. A work bag, gloves, and tools,

He was my knight in shining armour. Nothing more irresistible to a damsel in distress.

It took him less than a minute to break into my place.

Handing me my keys after circling around to where I was, he walked me into my place reintroducing his puppy to my cat. To make sure they had time together to spend as new siblings getting comfortable with one another.

He asked for nothing except that I was safe.

With his usual bright disposition, he smiled encouraging the two pets to play and get acquainted. I profusely apologised for all the trouble, asked him to stay to eat yet he convinced me to go out.

Wanting to ‘thank him’, he refused because he had to wake up early in the morning and had to drive an hour back. He had to make sure he slept well to be sharp at his new job he started since he was only on day 3.

Respecting his decision, I let him go with long kisses goodbye and rubs for his puppy’s cute face. Standing there still in disbelief, I made sure he safely entered his car with the sweet little puppy.

Insisting I get in my car before he did, he reminded me with, ‘You’re a lady. Get inside safe.’

I thought about him the entire night and all the small problems we had before washed away.

About this stressful story that could be something to laugh at in a wedding speech without a dry eye in the room. And the hilarious tale my best friend would share about how she saved me from going on a first date with someone else before I met my knight. About his hour drive home hoping he came back in one piece with Maximoose the Rottweiler.

Giuseppe always had all the answers. And routinely found ways to impress me.

I thought about the way he fought me wanting to stay together to prove how much of a man he is. How he planned out options for where my career could go living with him and make things work in future with a house and family.

He fought me saying to give him a chance to show him what he means. I am eternally grateful and lucky to have him by my side.

He told me he was different and shows up with action.

He is different and it is something I consistently point out. Giuseppe is terrible with words. I used to value poetry and roses on my own schedule. Instead, he shows up with a smile and help when I need him.

Why is his life this way?

Why does he choose these responsibilities over the ones I was used to?

Why does his routine look so different from mine?

There must be something wrong with this man.

But that is the whole point of genuinely getting to know someone. Each person displays all the beautiful brilliant qualities they carry in a different way. It might not be uniform or expeditiously recognisable. But they exist and they are there. Embrace the pleasant surprises and variables.

I will never see him the same again.

Each day he shows up, I am astounded. I asked about certain things that I thought were issues before and he explained why his life was this way. Originally, I thought they were excuses.

He makes me smile more each time we spend together.

Any time he asks for something, wants or needs anything, I will do it blindly, because I know I can trust him.

Not being the best swimmer, I would put on a blindfold, jump off a cliff into the ocean if he told me he could catch me.

Before I would have done it with fear. Now I move with courage. A confidence that makes my usual terrors only feel like the wind. Part of a normal day and not as significant when I am safe indoors.

Him showing up for me when I desperately needed help felt similar to baptism. I walked out a new woman with no more worries and strength to know a good man is out there who has my back. Not that I would dare attempt this again.

He spoiled me all weekend. He spoiled me on Monday as well.

And then spoiled me on Tuesday night saving me from turmoil. I am worried about getting used to this.

Earlier this day we talked about the idea of moving in together. Worried I was scaring him or rushing, he said it was a reasonable amount of time considering it was in our near future anyway. He takes our time day by day and means it.

He asked, ‘Why would I be scared?’

Apologising for being crazy (meaning too romantic for my own good with a head stuck in the possibilities), he said it’s a good crazy. But he is crazier than me and he knows this. He thinks of these scenarios if we worked out in the end too.

Giuseppe is the one person who always puts me in a good mood when I am down. Tries to stop me from choosing to be grumpy when he knows I am a naturally happy person and brings it out of me some more. He says I make him happy and shows what it means to him.

All I had to do was show up and be myself. Enjoy the ride. It does not get more romantic than this.
